Train Up A Child in Prayer

My Prayer Warriors

"Train up a child in the way he (or she) should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

If you're a parent, guardian or caretaker of children, you have a great responsibility. The scripture above says to train up a child in the way he should go. You can train or instruct your child to do anything, but I pray its positive and beneficial for them in the long run. In addition to stressing how important a good education is, instilling respectful manners, and teaching them to be productive citizens; I believe the most important training we can give our children is a spiritual foundation in God. It won't hurt to be good examples before them either. Jesus said, "If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a huge millstone tied around his neck and to be thrown into the sea" Mark 9:42. Wow, Jesus is serious about his little ones. Hmmm. We probably should be too.

Children are a gift from God and we (adults) are responsible for raising them according to Gods instructions. God is not looking for perfection from us; just willing and obedient hearts to train up these precious children to know His ways. Can I encourage someone with a wayward child? If your child has veered off the path, and you've trained them in the ways of God to the best of your ability - pray for them, and love them right where they are. I'm sure the disappointment is overwhelming and the pain is great, maybe even unbearable; believe in faith that God will help them find their way back. For those who did not teach your children the ways of God for whatever reason, be the best example you can, NOW. Love your children, pray for them and trust God to put them on course.

This post will be about training up a child in prayer. Most of us have taught our children the common bedtime prayer, "Now I lay me down to sleep," or the popular grace, "God is great, God is good, let us thank him for our food." Those prayers are cute, simple and perfect for getting children accustomed to praying. Those prayers are good for a time, but I want to challenge you not to limit your children to cutesy prayers. I believe children "can be" sensitive to spiritual things because their minds have not been tainted by everyday life. The purity in children allows them to have extraordinary faith, and as their prayer life develops, they will begin to see there is power in prayer.

Children should know "The Lord’s Prayer." This prayer encompasses our everyday living in the earth. It's a great template for basic prayer. If possible, explain to your child what each line in this prayer means so they'll have an understanding of what they're praying. A child's prayer is powerful because they simply believe that what they are praying for will come to pass. As parents, we have to nurture that simple faith.

Many times I purposely let my children see and hear me pray, so they'll be comfortable and accustomed to a lifestyle of prayer. My children are seven, nine, and sixteen years of age. I try to set aside time for prayer and bible study in my home, and I always let THEM open and close our study with prayer. In the mornings as I drive the kids to school, we have a short prayer session. Each day, a different child, will lead the prayer session which consists of The Lord's Prayer, Praise and Worship, and Intercessory prayer which teaches the children to pray for the needs of others. I teach my children to memorize bible scriptures because it’s important to couple prayer with the word of God. I feel scriptures add more weight and authority to our prayers.

Our children need to understand there is power in their prayers, and that prayer can actually change things! Cute little prayers for children are ok, but we can’t let them stay at that level. The world we live in is becoming increasingly scary. Our children, who are the next generation, need to know how to pray with power and authority with the word of God if they are going to see change in the world and in their own lives.

Let your child freestyle in his/her prayer by allowing them to pray whatever they want, or you can give them something to pray for. Correct them when you hear the prayer is a little off, they have to learn, right? When my seven year old was first learning to pray he would say, "Thank you for worshiping us Jesus." I would chuckle to myself then correct him by saying, "We love to worship you Jesus" lol!!

I hope you accept my challenge and teach your children to pray mature prayers so they'll start to develop a powerful, effective prayer life of their own. Teaching your children to pray establishes a strong foundation in communication with their heavenly Father, so when they grow old, they will never depart from it.

Psalm 91

God's Protection in the Midst of Danger

Psalm 91 is one of my favorite scriptures. When I feel discouraged, hopeless and fearful, I speak this Psalm with confidence. It helps me feel at peace and the anxiety I experience subsides. I personalized Psalm 91 for you. Be encouraged!!

I will live in the shelter of the Most High and rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare of the LORD, "He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him."Surely he will rescue me from every trap and protect me from deadly disease. He will cover me with his feathers, and under his wings I will find refuge. His faithful promises are my armor and protection. I will not fear the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day, nor the disease that stalks in the darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. A thousand may fall at my side, ten thousand at my right hand, but these evils will not touch me. I will open my eyes and see how the wicked are punished. I will say, The LORD is my refuge, The Most High is my shelter, no harm will conquer me, no disaster will come near my home. For he will command his angels to protect me wherever I go. They will lift me up in their hands, so that I will not strike my foot against a stone. I will trample on the lion and the cobras; I will crush fierce lions and serpents under my feet! Lord you will rescue me and protect me because I love you and acknowledge your name. I will call on you, and you will answer; you will be with me in trouble, you will rescue me and honor me. With long life you will satisfy me and show me your salvation. Amen

The Power of Prayer

Using Bible Scriptures

Do you know the power of prayer using bible scriptures?  Let me explain.  I began praying bible scriptures in 2002 when I needed God to turn my marriage around.  My husband said he felt hurt, used, and disappointed by me.  He told me he didn't love me anymore and uttered these words, "I want a divorce".  I was not prepared to hear those four words because we'd only been married one year.  I was surprised, afraid, and very confused.  After the initial shock wore off, I said there is no way I'm going to let my marriage fail.  I took hold of the good holy bible and located every scripture I could on marriage and being a wife.  I began to pray the scriptures I found over my marriage by replacing words in the scripture with me, my husband, us and so on.  The prayers turned into confessions that I would decree daily.  I began to emulate what the bible said a wife should be.  Within a year the Lord not only changed me, but my husband as well.  God answered my prayers and restored my crumbling marriage.  My husband forgave me, told me he loved me and wanted to work on the marriage.  August 2012 made 11 years of marriage for us.  Today we have a wonderful (not perfect) marriage and three beautiful children.  I'm thankful and grateful to God for answering my prayers.  Of course that was the short version of my story.  I can't even begin to tell you how painful and difficult that season of my life was.  One day I promise to share the full story.

The power of prayer is when God intervenes and changes you, your situation or the circumstances you've been praying about.  Luke 18:1 says, "Then Jesus told the disciples a parable to show them they should always pray and not give up".   Jesus wants us to pray no matter how great or how small the request is.  I didn't know if God was going to answer my prayer or not, but I'm glad I was persistent and didn't give up.

I know this sounds so cliche but prayer really does change things.  Hebrews 4:12 says, "For the word (scriptures) of God is living and active".  Isn't it amazing how the scriptures you pray can accomplish what you decree?  God is a powerful living being.  When you speak and believe in bible scriptures, you activate faith which pleases God and causes Him to move in your situation.  It may not always go the way you thought it would go but a shift will take place.  We have to remember, the bible is not  a magic book that will give us anything we want.  We can't pray bible scriptures or even say regular prayers and see results if our heart, motive, and attitude is not right.  James 4:2-3 says, "You don't have what you want because you don't ask God for it.  And even when you ask, you don't get it because your motives are all wrong-you want only what will give you pleasure".  Is God going to receive glory out of your prayer request?  Is anything good going to come out of this prayer request?  Are you the only one that will be blessed by the request or will others be blessed too?  Those questions are really what answered prayed boils down to.  God wants us to be happy, blessed, and living a fulfilled life, but according to his will.  If what we are asking God for does not bring him glory or fulfill a meaningful purpose in this earth, he may not answer that prayer.  God is moved by a pure heart, loving motives and a right attitude.

Sometimes prayers are answered quickly and sometimes they're not.  Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, "There's a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven".  Notice the word time.  Lol!!  The power of prayer is being patient and allowing the "Living Word" to be accomplished in it's due season.  Many times we hinder our prayers by taking matters into our own hands, which complicates things even more.  If the scripture you are praying or confessing requires action, do it!  If God prompts you to do something, by all means do it!  Otherwise, be patient and trust God.

Blessings,
Tytenisha
